There is a peaceful quite on a snowy winter morning. Today was just such a day. Traveling around town, I sought out some of my favorite spots to look around on this Wintry Valentine’s morning just as an overnight snowstorm was winding down. Let me share some of this morning’s images.
Des Moines on a Snowy Morning
Here is my one of favorite views of downtown from the bridge over the Des Moines River at SE 6th Street. The river is rapidly flowing with ice and the snow is just letting up. Look closely and see the bird circling.
Flag at the Statehouse
When you first think of a winter scene, you don’t think of color. But I was looking for color. When going past one of my favorite subjects, the Iowa Statehouse, I saw the Flag seemingly glowing in the starkness of winter.
Family Time in the Snow
I then went to Greenwood Park behind the Des Moines Art Center and saw Mom and Dad out with their toddler daughter and their dog, enjoying the snow. In my search for color, I couldn’t pass up the red and blue coats, and red sled out in the forest.
Hard Core Trail Rider
Lastly, as I neared the entrance to the Bill Riley Bike Path near Ashworth Pool, I noticed a trail rider on a Fat Tire trail bike riding a mountain bike trail through the trees. Iowans are hard core when it comes to biking, as I can surely attest, and again, it was the color on the snowy trail that caught my eye.

For this photo excursion, I tried out my new Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L II USM lens on my 5D Mark II. I am very happy with the clarity and the quick focusing. These were processed in Adobe Lightroom with enhanced Winter Scene techniques to bring out depth in the scenes and the color.
