Mount Rainier

What do you do when you see a mountain?

Washington Day 2-34-2

Mount Rainier at Sunset

One of the great aspects of travel is seeing incredible new sites.  We want to capture them as much as we can but often, what we see is never what we get in the final photograph.  What I use is a circular polarizing filter.

While traveling in the Pacific Northwest, we were fortunate to have an unbelievably clear day – something unusual, I was told.  I was out on the ferry traveling to Bainbridge Island and the sun was beginning to set on Mount Rainier, located 54 miles southwest of Seattle, Washington.  Therefore, this view is at about 60 miles.  At a height of 14,411 feet, it is the highest elevation in Washington state.  Incidentally, Mount Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.  But how to capture this incredible sight?

Without a polarizer filter, there would be a hazy blue tint to the entire image.  But by filtering out the natural blue hues, I was able to capture this amazing image and show its beauty in a more natural way.  What is even more amazing is that I never saw the mountain again for the rest of my trip.   As is often proved by the photographer, Fortune favors the well prepared.  (Louis Pasteur)
